For those of you who don’t know what mental health is, here is a definition:

“A person’s condition with regards to their physiological and emotional wellbeing”

Someone with good mental health is able to cope with the everyday stresses of life, realise their full potential, strive for success and engage and interact with people well.

However, someone with poor mental health will struggle with these things and may find it difficult to recover.

Why does it matter?

We all have mental health, like we all have physical health. Both change throughout our lives. And, like our bodies, our minds can become unwell. This is a definition of mental illness

“Diagnosable condition that significantly interferes with an individual’s ability to function”

  • Anyone can develop poor mental health and find it difficult to overcome their condition
  • We can get better – or recover – from poor mental health, in a similar way to getting better from a physical illness or problem
  • Talking about our mental health is a good idea and can help us get better sooner
